John 17:8
The context
In the prayer of chapter 17, Jesus is speaking about the disciples he is about to leave. He has asked for their keeping and their unity, and he grounds the request in what they have already done. Verse 8 lists three things: receiving the words, knowing the origin, and believing the sending.
What it establishes
It establishes that the prayer describes the disciples' faith as a settled fact rather than a hope, and that the content of that faith is the sending of the Son. The words received are identified as the words given to him.
What it does not establish
It does not say their faith was free of failure. The same night produces denial, desertion, and doubt, and the Gospel records all of it. The prayer states what Jesus says about them in his own hearing, not a verdict the narrative sustains without qualification.
