John 2:15-16

The context

This is the first of the sign narratives in John, placed at a Passover early in the ministry. Jesus makes a whip of cords, drives out the animals and the money changers, and speaks to those selling doves. The saying about his Father's house provokes the request for a sign that follows.

What it establishes

Jesus acts in the manner of a prophet against commerce conducted in the temple precincts, and he speaks of the house as his Father's. The action is public, deliberate, and interpreted by the Gospel as a sign.

What it does not establish

It does not license violence in a cause. The episode is a prophetic sign with a specific target, and the Gospel's own interpretation turns on the temple of his body rather than on a programme of reform by force.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
