John 2:19

The context

Jesus has just driven the traders from the temple courts, and the authorities demand a sign authorizing him to do it. He answers with a saying about destruction and rebuilding in three days. The narrator steps in two verses later to say that Jesus was speaking about the temple of his body, and that the disciples understood it only after the resurrection.

What it establishes

It establishes that Jesus's authority is tied to his own death and raising, and that the saying was deliberately opaque to its first hearers. It also establishes that the resurrection is offered as a sign, not merely as a wonder.

What it does not establish

It does not make the temple a cipher for the church. The narrator supplies the identification himself, and it is the body of Jesus, not a congregation or a building. Nor does the verse describe the resurrection; it only names it as the coming sign, three days ahead.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
