John 20:19

The context

The chapter follows Mary Magdalene's discovery of the empty tomb and her encounter with Jesus. That same evening the disciples are gathered behind locked doors, afraid of the authorities. Jesus comes and stands among them, and the first thing he gives them is peace rather than explanation.

What it establishes

It establishes that the risen Jesus is continuous with the crucified one, able to show his hands and side, and that he enters a situation of fear with a greeting rather than a rebuke. The locked doors are noted, not explained.

What it does not establish

It does not describe how he entered. The text says he came and stood among them; it offers no physics of a resurrection body and no theory of a locked room. Arguments about the nature of that body must be built from several passages, not this one.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
