The context

The other disciples have told Thomas that they have seen the Lord, and he answers with a refusal that is specific about the evidence he requires. He names the nails and the side. The narrator preserves the demand in full, and the next appearance answers it point by point.

What it establishes

It establishes that the disciples' testimony was not accepted without question, and that doubt was expressed openly rather than hidden. It also establishes the terms on which the doubt was met: the wounds themselves.

What it does not establish

It is not a model for demanding signs. The gospel records the demand without commending it, and the beatitude two verses later pronounces a blessing on those who believe without seeing. Nor does the passage say doubt is a virtue; it says it was answered.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
