John 3:17
The context
This verse follows the most quoted line in the Gospel and restates its logic in negative form. The setting is the night conversation with Nicodemus, which has moved from new birth to the Son lifted up. The passage then continues into the language of judgment, light and darkness in the verses that follow.
What it establishes
The verse states the purpose of the sending: not condemnation but salvation, and the object is the world rather than a select group within it. It clarifies that the love in the previous verse issues in rescue rather than in verdict.
What it does not establish
It does not deny judgment. The next verses speak of those who do not believe as condemned already. Nor does the sentence teach universal salvation; it names the purpose of the mission, not its success, and the two differ.
