John 3:18
The context
John 3 sets the conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee who comes at night, and moves into teaching about the serpent in the wilderness, the love of God and the coming of light into the world. Verse 18 sits inside that exposition, after the statement about the Son being given and before the passage on light and darkness.
What it establishes
The verse states that judgment is not only future. It is already present in the response a person makes to the Son: belief carries no condemnation, unbelief stands condemned already. The gospel frames the matter as a present verdict rather than a distant assize.
What it does not establish
It does not address those who never heard. The verse speaks of unbelief, and its setting is a conversation with a teacher of Israel who has the Scriptures. It says nothing about the unevangelized, nothing about degrees of guilt, and nothing about the mechanism of judgment.
