John 3:19-20

The context

These verses follow the statement about the Son being given and the world being saved through him. The passage turns from God's gift to the human response, and names the verdict: light has come, and people preferred darkness. Verse 20 gives the reason in terms of exposure.

What it establishes

It establishes that unbelief is presented as a moral preference rather than only an intellectual failure, and that the mechanism named is the fear of having deeds seen. The language of love and hate is strong, and it is applied to the response to light, not to the light itself.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that every skeptic is hiding something. The verse describes a pattern in the reception of light and does not sort motives case by case. Nor is all doubt hatred of the light; the Gospel records honest questioners.
