John 4:11
The context
Jesus sits at a well in Samaria and asks a woman for water. He answers her with an offer of living water. She points to the depth of the well and to his lack of a bucket. The conversation then moves to her husbands, to the mountain of worship, and back to water.
What it establishes
It establishes that her question is practical: she takes the offer as a claim about a better supply of the same thing. John uses that literal reading to let Jesus restate the offer in terms of a spring that does not run dry.
What it does not establish
It does not establish that she was hostile. She is puzzled and quick, not contemptuous, and the exchange ends with a crowd coming out to see him. Nor does the verse say the water is a metaphor for a specific doctrine; John leaves the image to do its work.
