John 4:42
The context
The Samaritan woman has returned to her town and told what happened at the well, and the townspeople have come out to see for themselves. They ask Jesus to stay, and he stays two days. Verse 42 records what they say to the woman after that stay, correcting her report.
What it establishes
It establishes that the Gospel presents Samaritan testimony arriving at a confession the disciples had not yet made. The title Savior of the world is placed on Gentile-adjacent lips, and the basis of their belief is said to be hearing rather than report.
What it does not establish
It does not say the title was understood in its later sense. The words are the Gospel's own summary of what they concluded, not a definition. Whether the Samaritans meant a deliverer for all peoples, or something narrower, cannot be recovered from the sentence.
Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
