The context

Part of Jesus's long answer after healing a man on the Sabbath. The authorities have objected on two counts, the Sabbath and his claims about God, and he answers by describing a division of labor between Father and Son. Verse 22 is the first of several statements in the chapter about who judges.

What it establishes

It establishes that judgment belongs to the Son by grant, not by usurpation. The Father is described as judging no one, which is a startling claim in a text saturated with the expectation that God is judge of all the earth.

What it does not establish

It does not describe the standard of judgment. The verse assigns the role and says nothing about the criteria applied. John gives no scene of assessment here, no list of deeds, and no account of what separates the judged from the spared.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
