John 5:23
The context
Jesus has healed a man at a pool on the Sabbath, and the controversy turns on his authority. He answers that he does only what he sees the Father doing and that the Father gives life. Verse twenty-three states the purpose of that arrangement in terms of honor.
What it establishes
It establishes a claim to equal honor and a mutual implication: whoever withholds honor from the Son withholds it from the Father who sent him. The two cannot be separated in the Gospel's presentation.
What it does not establish
It does not use later philosophical vocabulary. The verse speaks of honor and of being sent, not of substance, persons, or essence, and the technical terms of later formulation are not in the text. Nor does it explain how the unity it assumes is constituted.
