John 5:26-27

The context

Jesus has healed a man at a pool on the Sabbath, and the healing has started a controversy about the Sabbath and about his claims. His answer runs from verse 17 to verse 47, and its center is the relation between the Son and the Father, including the claim to give life and to judge.

What it establishes

The verses ground both life-giving and judgment in what the Son has received. He has life in himself as the Father does, and judgment is given to him because he is the Son of Man, a title that points to a human figure rather than to a distant one.

What it does not establish

It does not separate the Son's authority from the Father's. The sentence says the Father granted it, so reading the claim as independent deity misses the grammar. John holds giving and receiving together in the same breath and does not explain how both are true.
