John 5:27
The context
Same discourse, a few lines on from the claim that the Father judges no one. Jesus has said that life is in the Son as it is in the Father, and that a hour is coming when the dead will hear his voice. Verse 27 names the ground of his authority to execute judgment.
What it establishes
It establishes that the authority to judge is tied to the title Son of Man, not only to Sonship. The figure who judges is identified with humanity, which matters in a Gospel that insists the Word became flesh and does not cease to be so.
What it does not establish
It does not explain how the two titles relate. The verse sets Son and Son of Man side by side without reconciling them. Whether the title carries Daniel's imagery, or simply means a human being, or both, is argued and the sentence does not adjudicate it.
Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
