John 5:39
The context
John 5 continues the Sabbath controversy and the discourse on the Son. After listing his witnesses, Jesus turns to the Scriptures, which his hearers search because they believe life is found in them. Verse 39 is followed immediately by the charge that they will not come to him, and later by the note that Moses accuses them.
What it establishes
Scripture's testimony is christological in this Gospel's reading. The verse affirms both the searching and its object, then faults the searchers for missing what the search is for. Life is not located in the text as an end in itself but in the one the text points toward.
What it does not establish
It does not disparage study. The fault named is the aim of the readers, not the practice of reading; Jesus says the Scriptures testify, not that they mislead. It states a direction of testimony, and the Gospel supplies the specific readings elsewhere.
