The context

The bread of life discourse, after the crowd has asked what work God requires. Jesus has answered with the claim that he is the bread come down from heaven, and the hearers murmur at the claim he makes for himself. Verse 38 states the purpose of the descent.

What it establishes

It establishes that the Gospel presents the Son's mission as obedience to a prior will, and that the descent has a defined aim. The language of coming down is used to locate the origin of the mission, not to describe a journey.

What it does not establish

It does not set the Son's will against the Father's nature. The verse contrasts two wills in order to state a mission, not to describe a permanent division. John elsewhere has the Son say that he and the Father are one, and this verse does not resolve the tension.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
