John 6:40

The context

The discourse continues after the crowd's demand for a sign and Jesus' claim to be the bread of life. The hearers murmur because he says he came down from heaven. Verse 40 states the Father's will in the form of a summary, and it is one of several such statements in the chapter.

What it establishes

The verse joins seeing the Son and believing in him to the gift of eternal life, and it adds the promise of resurrection on the last day. It presents eternal life as something possessed now, with resurrection as its completion.

What it does not establish

It does not define what “looks” means. The verb can suggest beholding with attention or perceiving with understanding, and the Gospel uses sight language for faith without collapsing the two. Nor does the verse settle later debates about perseverance.
