The context

The bread of life discourse, delivered in the synagogue at Capernaum after the feeding of the five thousand. The crowd has asked for a sign; Jesus has answered with manna and then with his own flesh. Verses 53 to 58 are the densest stretch of the speech, and the hearers take offense at the language.

What it establishes

It establishes that John ties eternal life to eating the flesh and drinking the blood of the Son of Man, language deliberately shocking to ears trained to avoid blood. Life is presented as received from outside, never as something a person produces.

What it does not establish

It does not settle the sacramental question. Whether the passage refers to the Eucharist, to faith in the crucified Christ under metaphor, or to both at once, has divided interpreters sharply. The verse supplies the language; it does not supply the doctrine built on it.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
