The context

The bread of life discourse has just ended with the claim that unless one eats the flesh of the Son of Man and drinks his blood there is no life. Many of his disciples respond that the saying is hard, and ask who can listen to it. Jesus answers by pointing to the Spirit and to his ascent.

What it establishes

It establishes that the discourse was received as difficult by people already following him, and that the difficulty was not resolved by explaining it away. Jesus' reply does not soften the claim; it locates the problem in the hearers' capacity to receive it.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that the teaching was withdrawn. Nothing in the passage retracts the claim or offers a lower entry requirement. Nor does the word rendered hard necessarily mean offensive; it carries the sense of something difficult to accept, and the text leaves both readings in play.
