John 6:65
The context
The bread of life discourse is ending and the crowd is leaving. Jesus has said that the flesh profits nothing and that his words are spirit and life, and John notes that many turned back. Verse 65 restates an earlier claim in the chapter about the Father's drawing.
What it establishes
It establishes that coming to Jesus is described as enabled rather than merely permitted: the coming depends on a grant. The saying is offered as an explanation for the departure of the many, not as a general theological aside.
What it does not establish
It does not say who receives the grant. The verse states the necessity and stops short of naming the recipients or the basis of the giving. John's Gospel holds this together with a command to come and an indictment of those who refuse, and this verse does not resolve it.
