The context

Jesus is in Galilee during the Feast of Tabernacles, and his brothers urge him to go to Judea and show his works publicly. He refuses, telling them his time has not yet come. The narrator then adds this aside, an explanation the brothers themselves could not have supplied.

What it establishes

It establishes that unbelief was not confined to officials and outsiders; those who had grown up with Jesus did not accept his claims. The narrator treats this as significant rather than incidental.

What it does not establish

It does not say the unbelief was permanent. The text names no brothers and gives no later outcome; Acts mentions his brothers among the praying community after the ascension, which most readers take as a change. The verse describes a moment, not a verdict.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
