John 8:12
The context
This saying is set in the temple courts, in a discourse that follows a festival season. Jesus speaks of light and of following, then the Pharisees challenge his testimony as self-serving. The exchange that follows runs to the end of the chapter and ends in an attempt to stone him.
What it establishes
It establishes the light metaphor for guidance and life, with following as the stated condition, and it sets up the controversy over whether his testimony can stand. The challenge that follows concerns his testimony, not the image.
What it does not establish
It does not state a liturgical setting. The connection with the festival's lamp ceremonies is an inference from the surrounding notices, not something the verse says. Nor does the metaphor explain itself; the Gospel develops light imagery elsewhere without reducing it to a single meaning.
Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
