John 8:24
The context
This comes from a tense exchange in the temple courts, where Jesus' testimony is challenged and his origin disputed. He tells his hearers they cannot go where he is going, and they wonder whether he intends to kill himself. Verse twenty-four states the consequence of unbelief.
What it establishes
It establishes that belief in Jesus' identity is presented as necessary, and that dying in sin is the stated alternative. The saying is stark and leaves no third option in view.
What it does not establish
It does not settle the grammar of the phrase. The predicate after I am is left unstated, and whether it echoes the divine name or means simply that I am the one is disputed. The verse demands belief; it does not resolve the question.
