John 8:32

The context

Jesus is speaking in the temple to Jews who have believed in him, and he has just said that continuing in his word makes them disciples. Verse 32 draws the conclusion about truth and freedom. Verse 33 shows the audience balking: they claim never to have been slaves. The argument then turns to sin and sonship.

What it establishes

It establishes that freedom is connected to knowing the truth, and that the truth in question is his word, not a general body of information. The verse is a promise addressed to those already professing belief, and it is immediately contested by the hearers.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that information alone liberates. The condition attached is continuing in his word, and the following verses locate the slavery in sin rather than in ignorance. Nor does the verse promise that any true statement frees anyone; the truth named is the truth about him.
