The context

The verse closes a long argument in the temple about Abraham, descent, and freedom, in which Jesus has just said that before Abraham was, he is. The response is immediate and violent, and the Gospel says he hid himself and went out of the temple. It is the end of the public dialogue in that setting.

What it establishes

The saying provoked a lethal response rather than mere puzzlement, which tells us how the claim was heard. The Gospel uses the reaction to mark a turning point in the narrative.

What it does not establish

It does not settle the grammar of the saying. How the phrase should be rendered, and what exactly the hearers took as blasphemous, are disputed, and the verse reports an attempt rather than explaining the offence.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
