The context

Jesus and his disciples encounter a man blind from birth. The disciples ask whose sin caused it, and he rejects the premise. He then says that the works of God must be shown in the man, and adds this saying about light before making mud and sending him to wash.

What it establishes

It establishes a temporal frame for the saying and ties it to the sign that immediately follows: the healing is presented as light made visible in a particular life. The sign is the light's visible effect.

What it does not establish

It does not limit his light to his lifetime. The clause is narrative-specific and belongs to the moment before the healing; the same Gospel speaks of him as light in other frames. Nor does the verse answer the disciples' question about the cause of suffering, which Jesus sets aside.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
