Jonah 4:11

The context

The book closes with God's question to a sulking prophet, after the plant that shaded Jonah has withered and he has wished to die. The argument moves from the plant to the city in a step the prophet is left to answer. The book ends without recording his reply.

What it establishes

The question presents God's concern as extending beyond Israel to a foreign city and even to its livestock. It also exposes the prophet's pity for a plant as a measure of his misplaced grief.

What it does not establish

The number and the phrase about knowing right from left are disputed. Whether the figure counts people only, or includes children, or describes moral ignorance is argued, and the verse is not a statement about universal salvation.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
