The context

On the way to Jerusalem someone asks Jesus whether only a few are to be saved, and he answers with an image rather than a figure. The verses that follow describe a householder who rises and shuts the door, and guests left outside claiming acquaintance. The answer redirects the question from speculation to the questioner.

What it establishes

It establishes that entry is not automatic and that opportunity has a closing edge. The verb rendered strive carries the sense of effort or struggle, and it is addressed to the person asking, not to a third party.

What it does not establish

It does not define who is excluded. The passage gives no list and no criterion beyond the closed door and the master's refusal to recognise claimants. Arguments about the number of the saved, or about the fate of specific groups, cannot be settled from this verse.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
