Luke 23:34

The context

Luke's crucifixion scene has Jesus speak three times. The first saying asks the Father to forgive those executing him, on the ground that they do not know what they are doing. The line is missing from several early manuscripts and is marked as disputed in critical editions; the case for and against its originality is argued on both sides.

What it establishes

As it stands, the verse establishes that Jesus interceded for his executioners at the moment of execution. Forgiveness is asked for soldiers and officials in the act of killing him, not after repentance or apology. Luke's wider theme of ignorance and mercy runs through it.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that ignorance removes guilt. The prayer asks for forgiveness, which presumes an offense. Nor does it promise that the prayer was answered for every person present; Luke reports the petition, not its outcome, and the same chapter records no response from the crowd.
