Luke 4:21
The context
Luke's account of the Nazareth synagogue has Jesus stand to read from Isaiah, hand the scroll back, and sit down with the congregation watching him. His first sentence claims that the reading has just been fulfilled in their hearing. The reaction turns from admiration to violence within a few verses.
What it establishes
It establishes that Jesus publicly claimed a present fulfillment of prophetic text, and that he located it in his own person and speech rather than in a future event. The claim is made in a synagogue, to a home audience.
What it does not establish
It does not specify the extent of the fulfillment. Luke does not record which portion was read, and the citation blends lines from different parts of Isaiah. Whether the claim covers the whole oracle or only its announcement is disputed, and the passage does not say.
Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
