Luke 9:35
The context
The transfiguration, on a mountain after eight days of prayer. Jesus's face and clothing change, Moses and Elijah appear and speak of his departure, and Peter offers to build three tents. While he is speaking, a cloud covers them and a voice comes out of it.
What it establishes
It establishes that the scene identifies Jesus as the Son and issues a command to listen. The words echo the baptismal voice and the servant songs, and they are addressed to the disciples rather than to Jesus, which makes the command the point of the event.
What it does not establish
It does not say what the disciples understood. Luke notes that they kept silent and told no one in those days, and the next scene finds them arguing about greatness. A reader who takes the voice as producing immediate comprehension is reading past the narrative's own report.
Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
