Mark 1:15

The context

Mark opens with John in the wilderness, then Jesus' baptism and testing, then John's arrest. Jesus begins his public work in Galilee with a summary proclamation, and the first thing he does after it is call fishermen. The sentence is the closest thing the gospel gives to a thesis statement.

What it establishes

It establishes that Jesus announced a decisive arrival rather than a distant hope, and that the response he demanded was repentance and belief. The two imperatives are attached to an announcement, not to a program.

What it does not establish

It does not define the kingdom. The phrase is used throughout the gospel without a definition, and whether the nearness means present arrival, imminent future, or both is exactly the tension the gospel sustains. Nor does fulfilled fix a calendar; the claim is theological, not chronological.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
