The context

Matthew has told the story from Joseph's side: his discovery, his intention to divorce quietly, the angel's instruction in a dream, and his obedience. The verse closes that sequence by noting that he did not have marital relations with her before the child was born, and that he named the son Jesus, as instructed.

What it establishes

It establishes Joseph's restraint and his acceptance of the child as his own through naming, which is what gives Jesus legal standing in the Davidic line. It also underscores that the conception was not ordinary, without describing it.

What it does not establish

It does not settle the question of Mary's later virginity. The word until can imply that something changed afterward or can simply mark the period in view, and readers have taken both positions for a very long time. The verse is not decisive either way, and the dispute is old.
