Matthew 16:17

The context

At Caesarea Philippi Jesus asks who people say he is, then who the disciples say he is. Peter answers with a confession of Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God. Verse 17 is Jesus' reply to that answer, blessing Peter and naming the source of his insight.

What it establishes

It establishes that Peter's confession came by revelation from the Father rather than by human inference. The contrast is between flesh and blood and the Father in heaven, and it is a statement about how the confession was reached, not about Peter's rank.

What it does not establish

It does not establish that Peter was infallible. Five verses later Jesus calls him a stumbling block. Nor does the verse settle the claims later built on the next verse about keys and succession; it addresses the origin of a confession.
