The context

Matthew's account of the transfiguration, six days after the confession at Caesarea Philippi and the first prediction of the passion. Peter has proposed three tents, and a bright cloud overshadows them. The voice speaks while he is still talking, which is the detail Matthew keeps.

What it establishes

It establishes that the command to listen is set against the impulse to build and to commemorate. The scene endorses the Son and redirects attention from the site to the speech, and the disciples fall down in fear until Jesus touches them.

What it does not establish

It does not make the vision a proof for outsiders. The event is shown to three disciples and they are told to keep it quiet until the resurrection. Matthew presents it as confirmation for people already following, not as a public demonstration staged for skeptics.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
