The context

Pharisees have asked Jesus whether divorce is lawful for any cause, in a dispute that was live between schools of interpretation. He answers by going back to the creation account and the two becoming one flesh, then concedes that Moses allowed a certificate of divorce. The verse distinguishes what Moses permitted from what was so from the beginning.

What it establishes

Jesus separates a legal concession from the created order, and he names the reason for the concession as hardness of heart. The argument treats Genesis as normative and the law as accommodation to a condition.

What it does not establish

It does not settle the exception debate. How the following clause about sexual immorality fits, and whether divorce is ever permitted, is disputed among interpreters who all quote this verse.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
