Matthew 2:11

The context

The magi follow the star to a house in Bethlehem, where they find the young child with Mary his mother. They bow and present three gifts, and the scene answers the question they asked in Jerusalem. Warned in a dream, they leave by another route.

What it establishes

It establishes homage offered to the child by foreigners, and gifts that are costly and specific. The scene is the narrative's counterpoint to Herod's hostility in the same chapter: the child is honored while the king plots.

What it does not establish

It does not make the visitors kings, or three in number. Three gifts do not imply three givers, and the text calls them magi. Nor does it place the child in a stable; the family is in a house here.
