Matthew 2:2
The context
Magi from the east arrive in Jerusalem asking a question that troubles the whole city and Herod in particular. They speak of a star seen at its rising and of coming to pay homage. Herod then consults the chief priests and scribes, who point to Bethlehem.
What it establishes
It establishes that the first question in Matthew's Gospel about the newborn king comes from outsiders, and that it is framed as a search for the place of a birth that has already happened.
What it does not establish
It does not say how many came, or that they were kings. The text gives no number, and the traditions of three and of royal rank are not in it; the term used suggests astrologers or priestly figures. Nor does the verse identify the star with a known astronomical event.
Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
