Matthew 23:12
The context
This sits inside the denunciation of the scribes and Pharisees, after the warning about seat-taking and titles and before the series of woes. Jesus has just said that the greatest among them will be their servant. The verse states the principle that the warnings rest on, and a version of it appears elsewhere in the Gospel.
What it establishes
The saying sets out a reversal that operates in God's estimate of rank: self-exaltation leads to being humbled, and humility to being raised. It is a principle of the kingdom rather than a piece of social advice.
What it does not establish
It does not promise earthly success to the humble. The verse says nothing about when the reversal occurs or in what arena, and reading it as a guarantee of professional advancement empties it of its context.
