Matthew 24:24

The context

On the Mount of Olives the disciples ask about the temple's destruction and the end of the age. Jesus answers with a sequence of warnings: wars, famines, persecution, and false prophets. Verse twenty-four describes deception that comes with impressive signs and aims at the elect.

What it establishes

It establishes that deception in the narrative is not obviously counterfeit. The warning assumes signs and wonders can be performed by those who lead people astray, and that the danger is directed at insiders rather than outsiders.

What it does not establish

It does not give a timetable. The discourse mixes near and far horizons in a way interpreters still dispute, and the verse itself supplies no dates. Nor does it say that every report of the miraculous is false, only that signs alone cannot certify a messenger.
