The context

The scene is the final judgment, with the Son of Man enthroned and the nations gathered before him. The separation into two groups turns on what was done for the hungry, the sick, and the imprisoned. The sentence pronounced on the left is addressed to the cursed and assigns them to a fire whose preparation is attributed to another purpose and another audience.

What it establishes

It establishes that the judgment has two outcomes and that the fire was not, in the first place, prepared for the people being sent into it. The criteria named are concrete acts of mercy, not religious observance.

What it does not establish

It does not define the fire's nature. Whether the term rendered eternal denotes duration, quality, or an age, and whether the punishment is conscious and endless, are questions this verse does not answer. Nor does it explain how the mercy criterion relates to faith, which the passage does not mention.
