Matthew 27:51-53

The context

These verses continue the death scene, moving from the temple to the cemetery. The curtain described is the one inside the sanctuary, and its tearing is reported from top to bottom. The raising of bodies is attached to the same moment, though their appearance in the city is placed after the resurrection.

What it establishes

It establishes that the death of Jesus is presented as opening what was closed, both the sanctuary and the grave. The imagery is of a barrier removed rather than a point scored.

What it does not establish

It does not yield a chronology. Matthew places the opening at the death and the appearing after the resurrection, and the sequence has been read in several ways. Who these people were, whether they died again, and why no other gospel mentions them are all unanswered.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
