Matthew 28:17
The context
Matthew's final scene has the eleven meeting Jesus on a mountain in Galilee, as he had directed. They see him and respond, and the sentence records two responses at once. The commission that follows is given without any rebuke of the doubters, and the Gospel ends with a promise of presence.
What it establishes
It establishes that the tradition preserved doubt among the worshippers at the same appearance, and that the doubt did not disqualify anyone from the commission. Both responses are attributed to the group.
What it does not establish
It does not say what they doubted. The text does not specify whether the hesitation concerned the identity of the figure or the fact of the appearance, and the Greek permits either. Readers who resolve it one way or the other are supplying what the sentence leaves open.
