Matthew 28:19-20

The context

Matthew 28 records the resurrection, the women at the tomb, the guards, and the meeting in Galilee where some worship and some doubt. Verses 19–20 are the risen Christ's commission and the Gospel's closing words. The Gospel ends not with an ascension but with a promise of presence.

What it establishes

The commission is expansive: all nations, baptizing, teaching everything commanded. Authority is claimed first, and the mission rests on it. The closing promise of presence frames the task, so that the command is given with an assurance attached rather than as a bare demand.

What it does not establish

The triadic formula is liturgical, not a treatise. The verse gives the baptismal name, and later doctrine built on it; it does not itself set out the relations of the persons. Nor does it specify the mode of baptism or the structure of mission.
