Matthew 8:12
The context
A centurion has asked Jesus to heal his servant, and Jesus has marveled at his faith, saying that many will come from east and west to sit at the table with the patriarchs. The sentence that follows is the shadow of that promise. Those who expected to be at the table by right are described as being outside, in the dark.
What it establishes
It establishes that inclusion in the kingdom is not inherited from ancestry or religious standing, and that proximity to the promises is no guarantee of sharing them. The image of the banquet is turned against its presumed owners.
What it does not establish
It does not describe the punishment's mechanics. Outer darkness, weeping, and grinding teeth are stock imagery from Jewish apocalyptic, used here for shock rather than for architecture. The verse gives no account of duration, location, or conscious experience, and it should not be mined for them.
