Matthew 8:20
The context
A scribe volunteers to follow Jesus wherever he goes. The answer is a saying about foxes and birds, and about the Son of Man having no place to rest. The next episode has another disciple asking first to bury his father. Both sayings set the cost of following.
What it establishes
It establishes that discipleship does not come with settled shelter, and that the one issuing the call was himself without a home. The saying is a reply to a volunteer, not to a skeptic, which sharpens it: the warning is given to the enthusiastic.
What it does not establish
It does not establish that poverty is required of every disciple. The verse describes Jesus' own itinerancy; others host him and support the group. Nor is the Son of Man title explained here.
