Matthew 8:22

The context

Two would-be followers approach Jesus in a sequence, and this is the second. The man asks to bury his father before coming, which in that world meant waiting on a family obligation of real weight. Jesus answers with a saying that plays on the word dead and then continues the journey.

What it establishes

The saying places the call to follow above even the most solemn family duty, and it presents the kingdom as something urgent. It also distinguishes between those who are physically alive and those who are dead in the sense the saying intends.

What it does not establish

It does not forbid funerals or filial care. The verse addresses a specific request in a specific encounter, and the same Gospel elsewhere treats care for parents as a command that tradition must not override.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
