Philippians 2:5-8

The context

Philippians 2:5 introduces a passage most readers treat as an early hymn, whether Paul composed it or quoted it is disputed. The exhortation to humility in verses 3 and 4 prepares for it. The hymn runs from the form of God to the form of a servant, and it ends in exaltation at verse 9.

What it establishes

The verses establish a pattern of self-lowering as the shape of the ethic Paul wants. The one who had every claim does not use it, takes the standing of a slave, and goes as far as death. The obedience carries the story to its end.

What it does not establish

It does not explain what emptying involved. The terms for form and for emptying have been fought over for centuries, and the passage does not say which attributes were set aside or how the two natures relate. It states the descent; the metaphysics are left to later argument.
