Psalm 90:4
The context
This is the same psalm that later speaks of seventy years and of the strength of labour. Here the poet sets divine time against human time with two images, a single day and a watch of the night. The verse prepares the contrast between God's eternity and the brevity of human life that follows.
What it establishes
The psalm presents God as standing outside the ordinary measure of time, for whom long ages are as nothing. The image is meant to relativise human anxiety about duration, not to supply a ratio.
What it does not establish
It yields no chronology. The line is poetic comparison, and treating it as a fixed exchange rate for prophetic dates, as some readers have, mistakes the figure for a measurement the psalm never offers.
