Revelation 13:8

The context

Revelation 13 describes the beast rising from the sea, the dragon's delegation of authority, and the worship the beast receives. Verse 8 is a consolation clause attached to that description: those who worship are contrasted with those whose names stand in the Lamb's book. The syntax of the clause is compressed and has been read in more than one way.

What it establishes

It establishes that the book ties the register of names to the Lamb who was slain, and that it places the writing before creation. The clause functions to reassure readers under pressure.

What it does not establish

It does not settle the grammar's ambiguity. Translations differ over whether the names were written from the world's foundation or the Lamb was slain then, because the word order permits both. The verse is a compressed aside, not a treatise on predestination.

Short note, first pass, October 2026. Corrections welcome.
